University of Gloucestershire 1s top the table after thrashing the University of Plymouth 4-0

University of Gloucestershire head into the New Year top of the BUCS Western 3A table after putting four past the University of Plymouth.

After 37 minutes, UoG broke the deadlock through Ethan Cawley. Some great work from Macsen Rhys-Williams led to the goal, with the winger crossing the ball into the box to find the feet of Cawley, who capitalised and finished into the bottom right corner.

On the stroke of half time, UoG doubled their lead, as Cawley then set up Rhys-Williams for the second goal. Rhys-Williams’ shot deflected back off the bar, and the rebound fell kindly to Cawley, who slotted it away.

As the second half got underway, UoP looked sure to get one back. UoG gave away a penalty after Jasper Hudson fouled inside the area, resulting in a penalty in the 56th minute.

UoP’s captain stepped up, but his penalty hit the left-hand side post, with no one able to get to the rebound but the captain himself. He finished it off, but the goal was not allowed to stand as he finished off his own rebound, so UoG were still two goals to the good.

Plymouth remained the better of the two sides with multiple chances, but they were not able to put any of them away. UoG stayed strong at the back and defended well, and they also looked dangerous on the counter-attack.

Against the run of play, substitute Scott Chappell gained back possession for UoG, beating two defenders and then finding Rhys-Williams on his left, whose shot beat the keeper to make it 3-0.

Within minutes, UoG score their fourth through hat-trick hero Rhys-Williams. The forward took full advantage of a mistake by the UoP defence, and his shot passed the keeper to make it 4-0 to UoG.
