UOGWRFC’s staggering 39-10 varsity defeat at Sixways Stadium has left the team disappointed but ready take on next year’s challenger to bring home a varsity win in front of a home crowd.
Despite Gloucester’s ability to close the first and second half scoring, the odds were against their favour in this year’s varsity after they struggled to get their head in the game.
UOGWRFC captain, Avy Devgun, says: “This game did not reflect how we can normally play and I think sadly, the nerves got the better of us.
“I do think that now the young girls have experienced a proper varsity, they will most definitely (and hopefully) bring back the win next year”.
Unfortunately with Gloucester’s double header going against them, with mens rugby also losing their varsity point, the blues’ overall varsity score line was stressed to 8-8.
Devgun continues: “It was sad that I couldn’t finish the game on a high, due to dislocating my shoulder, but I was just glad that I got the opportunity to take the girls out to an amazing atmosphere.
“Varsity was a big day for me. As captain, I got the pleasure of leading the girls out for my final game of UOG and that’s massive.”
She says, “I cant really put into words how big Varsity is. Varsity is one of the biggest games of the year and the atmosphere is just something else.”
With the University of Worcester’s early points on the scoresheet, they quickly built momentum for a strong lead in the second half.
Gloucester’s limited ball time in the first half and Worcester’s quick turnovers didn’t do them any favours to take home the varsity point.
For now, all heads have turned to the Dynamites and swimming today (April 8) to secure a varsity win.
