Underachieving? Bristol City manager Nigel Pearson “doesn’t agree” with chairman Jon Lansdown’s remarks over Robins’ league position

Nigel Pearson has said that he “doesn’t agree” with comments from club chairman Jon Lansdown suggesting that Bristol City are underachieving this season as the Robins sit 17th in the Championship.

Speaking after Bristol Sport announced a new sponsorship deal with Huboo, Lansdown said that City “should be competitively better than we are doing at the moment in the league.”

With a number of key players out injured, including regulars Matty James and Rob Atkinson, Pearson believes his side are performing to the level that he expects.

“He (Lansdown) is the chairman so he’s allowed that point of view, but I don’t agree with him personally,” said the ex-Leicester City manager.

“We haven’t won the number of games we should’ve done and we haven’t got the number of points that we should have. But we are not underperforming, in fact a lot of our players are over-performing.

“As far as I’m concerned I would love it to be about results and people in my job ultimately lose their jobs because they don’t get enough wins, but this job is a bit more complex.

“We’ve made some really good progress in some areas, but back-peddled in other areas and the club is still struggling to find the identity that it really wants.”

Having released 11 players at the end of the 2020/21 season, Pearson has overseen a huge change in playing staff as well as a rework of his backroom team as the Robins aim to reach the Premier League within the next three seasons.

The attack has been revitalised while statistically the third worst defence in the league has ensured that the Robins have been unable to climb the table and remain wary of the drop-zone behind them.
