The cricket season is over but the indoor cricket season starts as the University of Gloucestershire head down to the Sophia Gardens for Indoor BUCS 

The Gloucestershire team will be the one of two Universities in their division to be from England as they play against both Cardiff’s Universities, Swansea and Aberystwyth and more over two weekends with the first one tomorrow on the 28th of October.

The 2023 Varsity winners hope to improve on a good year last year, winning three games out of six last year at indoor BUCS in Exeter.

The University team head down to Cardiff with a strong team with Ryan Kilmister leading the side, this team have some very experienced heads with the likes of James Tomson who has worked in professional cricket with Kent and Birmingham Phoenix in the Hundred as their lead analyst.

With the teams they are coming up against they will have to play their best cricket at all times to have a chance of winning the league as they play teams who play their outdoor cricket in the super BUCS league.

What is indoor cricket? Indoor cricket is usually played throughout the winter where they use a different ball and have different rules, you can be caught off the wall whilst every run you run is scored as two and every time you hit the wall it’s one run, it is 10 overs aside whilst you only have six players per team.  

“The atmosphere and intensity is something we have never experienced before” the University of Gloucestershire cricket team spoke on what’s it like to play at Indoor BUCS.

UOG Cricket are having a change of location for their indoor BUCS this year as they will be playing in Cardiff compared to Exeter where they have played the majority of their Indoor BUCS for the last couple of years.

“Experience is key which we have in abundance” The UOG cricket team speak about how experience wins you games in indoor cricket because of how tactically-based the game is.

The West Country-based University has had some practice already this season as they have been playing in the Cheltenham Indoor League where they have made a good start winning two from three after their loss to Cheltenham Civil Service who went unbeaten last season.

They have also been training over the month working on their skills and working out plans on how  to approach indoor cricket.

“We can go there and win every game” the University team speak on having full confidence that they can go there and beat the Russell Group Universities who have a bigger selection of players to pick from compared to Gloucestershire.

The University team are coming off a great season last year where they finished second in their outdoor BUCS season and they won Varsity which they hadn’t done for over five years. 

As said earlier on they kick off in Cardiff on the 28th of October where they will play four games at Sophia Gardens indoor centre against Swansea 1’s and 2’s, University South Wales and Aberystwyth.

They will then have a couple of weeks off and then they will go again on the 8th of November where they will play another four games against Cardiff 1’s and 2’s, Cardiff Met 2’s and University of West England.

UOG Cricket have named their squad for the weekend which is Ryan Kilmister (C), Adam Sercombe (wk), Toby Rice, James Tomson, Neal Osborn, Justin Murphy, Hayden Jones, Kieran Tierney.
