Europa League Preview: Barca take on Napoli whilst Rangers travel to Dortmund

The Europa League gets back underway tonight, and today we’re taking a look at two of the key ties taking place, with Spanish giants Barcelona looking to secure some form of European silverware, and Scottish champions Rangers hoping for unlikely glory in Europe’s secondary competition.

European football is always unpredictable, and there’s no doubt that will be the case this evening.

Borussia Dortmund vs Rangers

The only British team in this round of the Europa League, with West Ham already in the last 16, Rangers take on German Giants Borussia Dortmund in what will be a very difficult tie for Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s men.

Van Bronckhorst has made fans aware of the magnitude of the game. “You know when you are involved in Europe after the winter break that you are going to play against very good opposition.” He said, speaking to Stephen Halliday of The Scotsman.

Both sides sit second in their respective leagues, behind their fierce rivals Bayern Munich and Celtic respectively.

Once again Dortmund will be firm favourites for this clash, but Rangers will be looking to produce a famous European upset and progress to the last 16, with Dortmund’s talisman Erling Haaland set to miss at least the first leg with an injury.

Barcelona vs Napoli

The standout tie of this round, many would say, with European giants Barcelona hosting Italian title hopefuls Napoli.

It was a very disappointing Champions League campaign for Blaugrana, who are usually very used to reaching the latter stages of Europe’s main competition.

Xavi’s side have found some form in La Liga recently, and will be looking to carry that into Europe, and go all the way to winning the trophy.

Napoli meanwhile, fell short to Spartak Moscow in the group stages and have been drawn a difficult tie to progress to the last 16. However if there’s any season to face Barcelona in Europe, it’s this one.
