Top 7 Christmas Traditions

Christmas is a time of tradition – and traditions come in all shapes and sizes. Some are cute, some are weird, some are wacky. Whilst some traditions are ones we all do, others are ones that are personal to family. So we went on our social media and asked you your top Christmas traditions!

  1. Christmas Jumpers and a photo in front of the Christmas tree

Well here is one that we all know and love: Christmas jumpers! Every year without a fail, you will see people wandering around sporting their favourite jumper, some mad and some traditional. They come in a range of styles and in many families and friend groups it’s almost a competition to see who can get the craziest one. You can even get ones that sing when you press a button or light up. But a common theme among Christmas jumpers are animal themes; if it’s not an adorable animal, its a terrible animal pun.

2. New Pyjamas for Christmas Day

We all want the perfect Christmas outfit for the family photos of opening presents. So the common option is obviously pyjamas. If you’re not getting a set of pyjamas for a present, you’ll get some as a pre-Christmas present to wear specifically on the morning of December 25th. Or you’ll have a pair of extremely holey pyjamas that are basically falling apart that you wear every year.

3. Advent Calendars

You’re never too old for an advent calendar. Ever. Each year, so many people flock to the shops to grab their favourites – but the soft spot is always the cheap one pound ones that you’ve got since a kid. Without a doubt, you know someone who’s over 18 with a Peppa Pig advent calendar as it just has to be done. The cheap chocolate ones always taste about ten times better than the expensive ones for some reason anyway – it doesn’t make any sense but they just do.

4. Strange Christmas Tree Toppers

There’s the traditional star and traditional angel on the top of the Christmas tree, but there’s always ones that are out of the ordinary. It’s always amusing to see what people have on top of the tree, and there’s always that one quirky friend who has something different. A few of the out of the ordinary ones are: a snowman, one of the reversible octopus plushies and, my personal favourite, a Shaun the Sheep. It’s definitely one way to express what type of household you have.

5. Christmas Baking

Back onto the subject of food, lets bring up Christmas baking. There’s the gingerbread houses, the Christmas cake and the cookies; all which don’t look the best most the time but taste 100 times better than shop bought – in most cases anyway. It’s the one time of year you have the time to sit as a family and be creative, and as sloppy as anything may look, you get the best laughs out of them. It’s that one part of Christmas you would never want to give up.

6. Decorating the Christmas Tree

Right… this one is always the best fun but also the one most likely to end in an argument before the day’s even began. There’s always an argument on where the bauble looks best, what colour is the nicest, whether gold or silver is better and who is in charge. But it always looks amazing at the end of it. Well… hopefully it does… we do occasionally get the absolute fails.

7. Leaving a Snack out for Santa

This is one that just goes through the generations. You’ll leave out a snack out for Santa or a carrot for Rudolph (sometimes a glass of milk as well) and, without fail, the next day the plate will be empty with a few crumbs left or a bite will have been taken out of the snack. Its the most magical thing that just brings Christmas all together and brings all the stories to life from childhood.
