The FIA have today announced that the Russian Grand Prix, set to take place in September has been cancelled due to the Ukraine crisis.
The world of sport has responded to the escalation of the Russia and Ukraine conflict, with several top teams axing big Russian sponsorships, alongside sanctions implemented by the west.
The news comes after the Haas team earlier announced they had stripped their Ukalkali sponsors from their car along with the Russian themed livery ahead of the third day and final day of testing in Barcelona.
Sebastian Vettel has also been vocal about his concerns, as he stated on the first day of testing that he would refuse to participate, had the Russian GP gone ahead.
Other notable racers such as Max Verstappen and Fernando Alonso also commented on the situation, all in favour of the FIA’s decision.
The official statement on the F1 social medias reads: “The conclusion is, including the view of all relevant stakeholders, that it is impossible to hold the Russian Grand Prix in the current circumstances.”
Rather than cancel the meeting as a whole, it is much more likely it will be moved to another suitable location, however as of yet the FIA have made no suggestion of which country will be used as a replacement.
