“My confidence in the squad is absolute” Wade Elliott reflects on loss to Burton and previews tomorrow’s game against Morecambe

Cheltenham Town manager Wade Elliott has expressed confidence in his side and admits that the group have learnt from their performance against Burton.

Elliott was honest surrounding the Robins’ disappointing loss on Saturday and encouraged fans to keep supporting the players despite their recent results.

“I’d say just stick with us. I do understand the frustration and obviously fans have got a right to vent their frustration but I don’t want this to spill over into something everyone regrets later.

“I have no problem with there being a dialogue between fans, players and staff because I do think we’re all in this together.”

Currently, the Robins are without a win from their last three games and sit 20th in League One, level on 14 points with Oxford United.

“My confidence in the squad is still absolute and within the players there are always peaks and troughs.

“Listen, we weren’t very good at Burton and there’s absolutely no escaping that but I won’t let that define the players or the group.”

Elliott admitted after Saturday’s game that he had set the team up to ‘fight and scrap’ however admitted this morning that there cannot be a repeat of what he saw at the weekend.

“We pick a team and have a game plan to go and get a result in every game.

“We’re always looking to fight and scrap, I think that’s a pre- requisite of any performance but we have to find a better balance than we did at Burton.

“We’re trying to find a formula that better suits us away from home and what we tried at Burton didn’t work but you live and you learn from trying.”

Morecambe are tomorrow nights visitors at the Completely-Suzuki Stadium and a loss against them could bring immense pressure onto Elliott as fans grow increasingly impatient.

Having recorded impressive victories against them last season, he was quick to extinguish any mentions of taking the game for granted.

“I think just because you won the last one, it doesn’t mean you have the right to just expect to win the next one.

“Obviously, we’ve done our homework on them, they had a good result at the weekend through beating Barnsley and had a point at Burton last week so we certainly won’t be treating them lightly.

“Just because we beat them last season doesn’t mean we have an entitlement to rock up and expect the points.”

The Robins remain unbeaten on Tuesday nights so far in League One and Elliot was keen to praise the fans for their support in the midweek games this season.

“When I was a player I always enjoyed night games that little bit more for some reason whether it was the floodlights or a little crack in the atmosphere.

“People have been at work all day and it’s a release but the atmosphere is massively important and even though we might not get the biggest numbers there’s definitely times when it can get loud and on top of our opponents.”

Kick off is at 19:45 tomorrow night and Cheltenham Town fans will be urging their side towards a much needed victory which could potentially allow them to climb a few places up the table.
