Morrisons has confirmed that sick pay will be cut for all unvaccinated workers that have to isolate due to Covid- 19.
Unvaccinated workers who test negative, but still have to isolate, will receive statutory sick pay of £96.35 per week. Which is the minimum amount that an employer must provide as sick pay.
If any worker receives a positive test result, regardless of vaccination status, they will receive full sick pay.
This move follows other retailers – such as Ocado, Next and Ikea – who announced earlier this month that they would also be cutting sick pay for unvaccinated staff.
Morrisons chief executive, Dave Potts, said that these cuts could help tackle the “biblical costs of managing Covid,” during first plans to cut the pay in September 2021.
Kim Holder, Sales Assistant at Morrisons, believes that more companies should implement these policies and says: “If a staff member isn’t willing to be vaccinated then it’s more likely that they could become more ill, than someone who is vaccinated, and Morrisons shouldn’t have to pay for this decision.”
However, people today have voiced their disapproval and have flocked to Twitter to give their opinions on the matter.
While some people have called Morrisons out for a policy which they deem is discriminatory, other people worry that this will lead to workers to lie about whether they need to isolate or not, to avoid on missing out on pay.
Morrisons has not yet offered a response.
