Wordle becomes newest craze on Twitter

Wordle is rising in popularity this month on Twitter, over 6,000 people on the app have taken on the game today to guess today’s word.

The game is simple to understand. A five letter word is randomly chosen by a computer and the player has 6 chances to guess what it is.

After a guess, a letter is marked green if the letter is correct, yellow means the letter is in the wrong place and grey means the letter is not in the word.

If this sounds familiar, it is basically ‘Lingo’. However, it’s online, free and fun to play everyday.

Wordle was created by Josh Wardle; he works at Reddit, another popular social media app.

Today, the word was Proxy and nearly everyone failed to guess right. Most got the first three letters right, but found it hard to guess the last letters. Paul Sinha from ‘The Chase’ didn’t take it well.

Other celebrities that have played it include Richard Osman, Jimmy Fallon, Linda Carter (who played the original Wonder Woman) have all taken part in the game.

We put Wordle to the test in the workroom and some people played for the first time. Chloe Hall played her first game and got the word right in the 5th attempt.

“It was fun to play” she says, “but I would prefer it as an app and play daily”.

Meg Griffiths failed to get the word right by guessing the word ‘prove’. She thought it was “addicting” and feels interested to play again tomorrow.

“I can’t play word games” Sophie Flowers begrudgingly while watching Euan Carney guess the right word in three goes!

“Lucky first guess”, Euan replies after guessing ‘party’ in his first attempt.

Wordle has proved itself as a success story this January, but only time will tell if the online game can continue to make people smile or groan.
