Wade Elliott gives the lowdown on Will Goodwin signing as Stoke City loanee impresses on debut

Will Goodwin scored on his debut for Cheltenham Town in a 3-1 win over Salford City, and boss Wade Elliott has been discussing the signing

Will Goodwin, who spent last season on loan at Hartlepool United, signed on at the Completely-Suzuki Stadium this week.

Goodwin featured for 79 minutes midweek against Salford City in his debut, managing to score to put the Robins 3-1 up, before being replaced by fellow Stoke City loanee Christian Norton.

Cheltenham Town manager Wade Elliott was seriously impressed by Goodwin’s debut.

“He got an ovation when he came off the pitch. I asked the players why they think he did and I know it sounds basic but he’ll run around, he’ll work really hard, and he’ll hassle the back four, which is a really good starting point for any player.”

Cheltenham were left needing a striker after Dan Nlundulu left the club to join Bolton Wanderers on loan until the end of the season.

Elliott discussed the player profile they were looking for, which led them to Goodwin,

“Character. Obviously, we have good links at Stoke, so we are able to do a lot of background on him, into the type of player and type of person he was.”

“In terms of profile he’s different to what we’ve got. He’s 6ft 2, 6ft 3, he’s 20-years-old, good physicality, good work ethic, and he makes decent runs. We think he has a lot of decent raw ingredients.”

“There are raw attributes, more importantly he’s got the character to let us hone the attributes. He’ll help us, he’s not the silver bullet, he’s not going to come in and be the answer to everything, he’ll certainly help us in the moment, and we think he can develop into a really good player.”

Goodwin looks set to make his League One debut this weekend, as Cheltenham face Derby County at the Completely-Suzuki Stadium.
