A woman was raped in the Southgate Street area of Gloucester on Tuesday night.
The attack happened in Chelsea Court at around 7.30 and police are appealing for witnesses to come forward.
The woman was taken to hospital where she received treatment for facial injuries.
The offender is described as being of mixed heritage, in his late teens, short and of slim build.
Police investigations are ongoing and anyone who witnessed any suspicious activity or who has information that can help police with their enquiries should call 101 quoting incident number 444 of 9 January 2018.
UPDATE
We now believe we have located the person involved in the incident and in light of further information gathered during the investigation we can update people that we believe no sexual assault took place.
However a 17-year-old male youth from Gloucester has been arrested in connection with the incident and will be questioned in relation to an alleged physical assault involving the same victim.
The youth remains in police custody at this time.
