During today’s cabinet meeting, Sir Keir Starmer opened with a statement saying that he is planning to stay in the fight as Prime Minister, and head of the Labour Party.
After a disastrous election for Labour, 83 Labour MPs have said they do not have confidence in Starmer’s leadership.
However, the Prime Minister is staying put.
During this cabinet meeting, the PM said that a challenge for leadership has not been triggered. The Prime Minister said: “The country expects us to get on with governing. That is what I am doing and what we must do as a cabinet.” He also said that changing the leadership would be “chaotic.”
The BBC political editor, Chris Mason, has described Sir Keir Starmer as ‘publicly defiant’.
Labour has suffered hugely in the aftermath of Thursday’s election, most notably in Wales, which has been under Labour for over a century – until now. On Thursday, Plaid Cymru won the majority in Wales, sending shockwaves through the Labour Government.
It only seems to be getting worse for Starmer as the Communities Minister Miatta Fahnbulleh has resigned. She is the first of the Government Ministers to resign this morning. She stated: “The message on the doorstep was clear: you, Prime Minister have lost the trust of the confidence of the public.”
This afternoon, more ministers have resigned including Jess Phillips, the safeguarding minister in the UK Government.
We are still waiting for the cabinet meeting to finish.
We will update you when we find out more.
