All three of the Labour MPs for Gloucestershire have called for the Prime Minister’s resignation.
After a devastating loss of seats in Thursday’s local election, many Labour MPs have lost faith in their leader, with over 70 calling for him to resign.
Simon Opher, the MP, actively called out Sir Kier Starmer saying, “The Prime Minister cannot take our party to the next general election. We owe it to our members, elective representatives & the country to set aside pride and ambition.
We need an orderly transition that brings the together the very best talents across the Labour Party to deliver this change this country so desperately needs and stop the far right from entering number 10.”
Matt Bishop, the MP for the Forest of Dean, put out a statement last night that stated he is withdrawing his support for the Prime Minister’s leadership. He says that “Sir Kier Starmer is a decent man who has worked hard for our country, and I do not make this statement lightly or with any satisfaction whatsoever.” But he also acknowleged that “It is about trust, credibility and confidence that the Government is listening to the people it serves.”
Alex McIntyre, MP for Gloucester, also put out an official statement last night saying he too is calling for a “change of leadership of the Labour Party and the country.” He says that “too many mistakes have been made” and criticises the decision of appointing Peter Mandelson.
This is a heavy blow for Kier Starmer, but at this time he is not going to resign unless 81 Party members back another candidate.
There will surely be more to follow.
