Travel disruption: A40 closure, M5 delays and train cancellations

TRAIN UPDATE: Disruptions continue as Great Western have advised passengers not to travel “unless absolutely necessary”. Tickets for today’s date will be accepted tomorrow. Delays are expected until 16:00.

A40 UPDATE: The A40 is now open according to TVP Roads Policing.

Road accidents and railway thefts caused delays for commuters this morning. Traffic stopped both ways on the A40 between Cheltenham and Oxford, cable thieves caused cancellations to Bristol trains and an M5 accident left one lane closed. Keep an eye on our website for updates.

TRAIN CANCELLATIONS Rail services between Gloucester and Bristol Temple Meads have been cancelled this morning following the theft of signal cables. The thefts, which took place in the Filton Abbey Wood area, have caused widespread disruption. The disruption is expected to continue until 13:30. Passengers can use their Great Western Railway tickets on any reasonable route.

A40 CRASH The A40 is closed in both directions between B4047 Burford Road and A361 High Street/Barns Lane this morning. The disruption is due to an overturned lorry which blocked both sides of the road. Traffic built up from the time of the crash at 5:45 this morning. Recovery of the lorry should take around 6 hours in total.

M5 CONGESTION One lane of the M5 Southbound between J7 Worcester and J8 M50 was closed this morning following an accident between a motorbike and a car this morning. All lanes have now re-opened as normal.
