“It’s all good and well dominating between the two boxes, but games are won and lost in the box.” Aston Villa boss Carla Ward ahead of clash with Everton

Aston Villa will face Everton on their home turf in Walton Hill Park this Sunday for a WSL clash, fighting to stay up.

Villa are currently ninth in the table, only two points above Everton and both teams have been putting up fights in their recent fixtures.

In a press conference preceding their match against Everton, Villans boss Carla Ward spoke about what the team has been working on ahead of their fixture.

“It’s all good and well dominating between the two boxes, but games are won and lost in the box.

“We’ve done a lot of work in and around the box this week.

“We’ve got to make sure that we’re more clinical, and I just think when one or two people get a goal, it just gives everyone a massive lift.

“And we’re really good in the moment, energy is high and the players have been unbelievable.

“I can see a real improvement week-in and week-out with this group. We’re in a really good place.”

Ward went on to speak about Everton: ”I think they’re in a similar boat to us, they’re playing good football.

“Against West Ham, they dominated the ball and then as soon as they first conceded it changed massively.

“They’ll be in a similar mood to us really, looking for a little bit of luck like we are, but they’re a good side and have some fantastic players.

“So it’ll be difficult but like I said, my players have been brilliant and they’ll certainly be ready to go again.”

The Villans manager confirmed that Rachel Corsie and Chloë Arthur are back in contention for the squad.

And added: “Meaghan Sargeant hasn’t quite recovered yet so she misses out, but apart from that we are pretty much at full strength.

“But ultimately, everybody last week was quality, so the standards are high right now.

“The competition is high, the intensity is high, and the drive is there.

“It’s one of those where we will have another headache in selecting a starting 11.”

In response to concerns addressing Hannah Hampton, Villa and England Keeper, who made a few mistakes in her past couple games, Ward had nothing negative to say.

“The reality is if you make mistakes in Hannah’s position, they’re highlighted.

“She’s hungry and she’s bounced back in training, Hannah’s an individual who knows what it takes at the top level and she’ll be ready to put that right come Sunday I’m sure.”
