Hege Riise: Former USA Women’s assistant appointed Team GB manager for Tokyo Olympics

Norwegian manager Hege Riise says she is “honoured and humbled” to be handed charge of Team GB’s women’s football team for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.

Despite this appointment, Riise will continue to keep the role of interim manager of the England women’s team.

I know this is a massive job that a lot of coaches wanted,” said Riise.

I’m honoured to be in charge of this team.”

With Riise strongly believing that Team GB can win Olympic Gold this summer, the former midfielder insists that it is crucial to make sure the team believe they can reach the pinnacle.

Absolutely [we can win it]. That’s the question that we need to ask the players as well, what do they believe we can achieve?

From that answer we need to build on how we can put in to their confidence that this is possible.”

Riise will be joined on the coaching staff by Rhian Wilkinson, who works in a support role with the Lionesses and another coach is set to be announced soon.

Former Lionesses coach Phil Neville was in line to take the Team GB job, but was snapped up by Inter Miami, the club owned by David Beckham, in January.
