Aleksander Mitrovic breaks Championship goalscoring record as he nets his 32nd goal of the season

The current second-tier record of 42 goals in the 1992-93 season is held by former Portsmouth forward Guy Whittingham.

In 2004 the league was given a revamp becoming the now recognisable ‘Championship’, thanks to his opening goal last night Mitrovic now holds the record since the remodel.

There’s no selfishness in Whittingham’s mind, as he wishes the 32-goal man luck in his attempt to surpass him.

The Serbian international took the crown from Ivan Toney, who scored 31 goals last season, scoring a brace in his sides 2-1 win over relegation strugglers Peterborough United yesterday.

Mitrovic broke the record from the penalty spot in the 28th minute of the game, sending Posh goalkeeper Steven Benda the wrong way.

He wasn’t finished there, he doubled his tally in the second half moving onto 33 goals in just 30 games. In that time, he has scored three hat-tricks and six braces, guiding him to this historic achievement.

The 27-year-old has got some of the best talent in the league around him, the likes of Fabio Carvalho and Harry Wilson are Premier League-quality players making the strikers job easy at times.

Mitrovic is a goal scoring machine, but has also proved that he has the ability to assist his fellow attackers. He sits in the top 10 in the league for the number of assists he has racked up this season with seven, taking his goalscoring involvements to 40.

Remarkably, he still has 14 games left and with a goal on average every 79 minutes it is looking very likely that he will also break Whittingham’s second tier record.

With Fulham looking set for an immediate return to the Premier League following their relegation last season, their number nine will be hoping for an improvement on his previous campaign at the top level where he netted just three times.
