Forest Green Rovers Defeat Cheltenham Town In First Ever League One Gloucestershire Derby

Forest Green Rovers earned their second successive win for the first time this season with a derby day win over rivals Cheltenham Town.

The first half was dominated by Ian Burchnall’s Forest Green side, with Brentford loanee Myles Peart-Harris being the first to really test Luke Southward’s goal, forcing a fine save against Peart-Harris’ long range strike in the 28th minute.

The flow of Forest Green traffic kept on coming, with Southwood making a number of saves before it was Alfie May’s turn to have a go at goal for Cheltenham on the stroke of half time, as he caught a sloppy clearance on the volley outside the box, but Luke McGee found it a comfortable enough save.

The second half saw Wade Elliott’s Cheltenham warm to the game, but only after after an attempted cross from Forest Green captain, Bailey Cargill, almost caught Southwood out and producing what would’ve been a freak goal.

The breakthrough finally came with 15 minutes to play, when Harry Boyes’ free-kick from the right hand side met the head of Peart-Harris on the six-yard box, who made no mistake in securing three points for Burchnall’s side, leaving them just one-point away from getting out of the relegation zone.
