University of Gloucestershire’s Enya Lackie on Rugby defeat to UWE: ‘For myself it was definitely the most physical game so far’

University of Gloucestershire Rugby Women found themselves on the wrong end of a 43-5 hammering yesterday when they faced University of West England at Lockleaze in the BUCS league.

Despite the heavy loss, Gloucestershire back and 2nd Year Sports Journalism student Enya Lackie remained positive and said the team’s mindset going into the match was good.

“We had a proper buzz going into the game and it was really looking up for us after our defeat last week,” she said.

“However, once UWE got the first try under their belt the first half went a bit downhill from there really. It was a very physical game and in the first half we were defending about 85% of the time.”

Gloucester’s Sisilia Tuipolatu was lively in the game and made lots hard carries.

Beth Nicholls, Madi Williams and Amy Boswell also stood out for the visitors.

Nevertheless, with the score 36-0 to the home side at half time, it appeared a mountain to climb for Gloucester in the second half.

Lackie made some positive comments on her team’s performance in the second half, saying: “despite the rocky start, the second half felt like a completely different game. Everyone was switched on and ready to go. Its like we were a different team.

“In the second half alone, the score was 7-5 which definitely showed a great comeback from us. I scored the only try of the game.

“However, once we managed to break through their defence, their number 15 was sharp on the tackles. For myself it was definitely the most physical game I’ve played so far in the BUCS league.”
