University of Gloucestershire Football Club Captain Sam Gorham: “We Want To Get Back On The Pitch As Soon As Possible.”

University of Gloucestershire Football Club captain Sam Gorham has targeted a return to the field for the university’s sports teams in time for varsity week against Worcester later in the month.

Towards the end of the last academic year, BUCS (British Universities & Colleges Sport) announced that all University sport would be cancelled due to Covid-19. With university students now back on campuses, it could mean an earlier-than-expected return for university sport.

For third-year students like Gorham, who have invested so much time and effort into their clubs, this could mean one final chance to represent the Uni of Gloucestershire.

“I’m in the third year so this season was supposed to be my big final send-off in football.” said Gorham.

“If we weren’t able to get back on the field with the lads it would be a massive shame for us leaving after this year. As soon as it’s safe to do so, we’ll be back playing.”

Last years’ cancelling of university sport was particularly heart-braking for Gorham and the men’s football team at UoG. With one game left of the season and the team in contention to win the league, BUCS were forced to cancel the season due to Covid-19.

Gorham insists his side are ready and raring to go ahead of varsity, where UoG sports teams face off against Worcester University. Along with the regular BUCS season, last year’s varsity was also cancelled.

“We’re really keen for it to go ahead.” said Gorham.

“We want to participate in it and give all boys and girls in the clubs one last opportunity to represent UoG if they’re in their final year.

“Having spoken to people at the SU, they’re also keen for it to go ahead, so hopefully it can.”
