Boris Johnson is under pressure to explain how and when the costs were met for the refurbishment of his private flat above 11 Downing Street
According to Boris Johnson’s former chief adviser, Dominic Cummings, the prime minister had devised a plan to have donors “secretly pay for the renovation”, which he regarded as “possibly illegal”.
The government said “costs of wider refurbishment in this year have been met by the prime minister personally”.
The prime minister and his fiancée, Carrie Symonds, are said to have wanted an overhaul of the flat in order to replace what has been termed Theresa May’s “John Lewis furniture nightmare”.
The allegation comes as Cummings published his first blog post since ‘quitting’ his role in November of last year.
Among the allegations of donors paying for the renovation, Cummings has also denied that he leaked details of the second covid lockdown in November, as well as the text messages sent between Johnson and James Dyson.
He has also alleged that Johnson considered blocking an inquiry into the leak, in case it involved a close friend of his fiancée, Carrie Symonds.
Opinion polls show a fall for the Conservatives, highlighting that the public are losing faith in Johnson and his government.
Despite this, the Labour Party has too lost support. Although much less than the Conservatives.
Instead, the Liberal Democrats have gained 2% since these allegations were made.
It’s unknown at this stage how it will affect the upcoming local elections, which are the first since covid began.
