10 years ago, Manchester United won their 13th title and that would be their last for a while after Sir Alex Ferguson retired at the end of that season, writes Joshua Rogers.
Since he left in 2013, they have gone through lots of different managers with some being better than others, but all have failed to win the ultimate prize of the Premier League with even 5000/1 Leicester City manging to win it in 2016.
David Moyes came in and managed to win the Community Shield but finished seventh and was sacked before the end of the season.
Louis Van Gaal was next and he got United back into the top four in the first season before winning the FA Cup the season after however he was sacked the same day after finishing fifth in the league.
The Glazers then turned to the experience of Jose Mourinho and again he managed to win trophies winning the Community Shield, EFL Cup and Europa League in his first season but after that he won nothing and was sacked midway into his third season.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was made interim and after a good spell he was made permanent manager. Again, he failed winning no trophies and losing the Europa League final on penalties to Villareal. He was then sacked midway through the 2021/22 season with Ralf Rangnick becoming interim and also failing miserably.
Erik ten Hag was then appointed manager and fans have praised the ex-Ajax boss. After a very difficult start he has managed to turn it around and results have been very good. I got opinions off a couple of Manchester United fans on what they think of the new man in charge, and they had high hopes and a lot of praise for him.
Paul McGarry a local Manchester United fan has said “I think he’s the right man to take us forward especially after the dross we’ve watched in the last ten years or so.”
Ten Hag made a number of signings in the summer and McGarry was also asked about that.
“Every signing Ten Hag has made has worked out so far, people were worrying about splashing the cash on the likes of Casemiro and Antony, but they’ve performed well.”
The Red Devils brought in four signings in the summer, Casemiro, Christian Eriksen, Antony and Tyrell Malacia with all performing very well and putting in a shift when called upon.
With McGarry being a younger fan, I thought it would also be a good idea to ask someone’s opinion who was older and had experienced both the good days of Sir Alex Ferguson and the bad days in the last ten years.
So, Charlie Rogers believed that: “ten Hag seems to be the right man so far but there still needs to be a few tweaks as I don’t want to be seeing us get thrashed by the likes of Manchester City and Brentford again.”
United lost 4-0 to Brentford in their second game after conceding four in 35 minutes and went 6-1 down to Manchester City but pulled it back to 6-3 to make it less embarrassing. However, since that Manchester City game, United have played 17 games and have only lost one out of that 17 and next face Charlton in the EFL League Cup looking to reach the semi finals once again.
Since the World Cup United have managed to win every game winning all five, they’ve played. They remain nine points behind League leaders Arsenal so can they carry on this run and maybe push for the title, if the first team stay fit and there is little to no injuries, I believe they can.
