Atlanta United have used their compensatory pick from the MLS Superdraft to select Enfield-born Tola Showunmi.
The 6’3 striker was the 88th overall pick from the draft, after being named East America Striker of The Year for scoring 10 goals in 19 appearances for the University of New Hampshire.
Showunmi moved to America to go to Merrimack College for the 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons, after spending his youth career in England with Cheshunt FC and before that Boreham Wood Youth.
He was one of seven English prospects that entered the draft, but was the only one to be selected.
Atlanta United finished fifth in the Eastern Conference last season, losing in the first round of the MLS Cup Playoffs to eventual champions New York City FC.
Their roster includes former Premier League players such as Brad Guzan and Emerson Hyndman, as well as Leeds-born Jackson Conway.
Atlanta kick off their 2022 season at home to Sporting Kansas City, on February 27.
