Mike Tindall MBE to star in local Charity match against Gloucester City AFC

Gloucester City will host a different type of opposition in their Heroes for Rugby Charity fixture at New Meadow Park, on January 30.

The fixture is in preparation for the Rugby for Heroes legends game which will take place later in the year but will also allow Gloucester AFC to show off their new ground to former players and fans alike.

Amongst the players is World Cup winning centre Mike Tindall, who played for both Gloucester Rugby and England throughout his career.

He’ll captain the Rugby for Heroes side against a plethora of former Gloucester City players, including record appearance maker Tom Webb, who also captains the hosts.

“We’re excited to take on this new challenge in facing Gloucester City Legends team in a competitive game of football to show of our ‘silky skills,'” said Tindall, speaking to Gloucestershire Live.

“We are glad that the two sports can come together with the local community to create an amazing event whilst raising funds for a great cause.”

But aside from the fame of the personnel on show, there’s a very real reason behind hosting events such as these as CEO of Gloucester Sport Jay Marriott explained.

“We didn’t do a great job of the whole coming back thing, you know coming here to New Meadow Park and we thought it would be great to bring some fan favourites back and let them have a game and honour them really.

“From my perspective its about making sure we have a better and closer relationship with some of the other sports in the city.

“We like being together is gonna bring a bigger rise to charity events such as this, we’re always keen to get involved with charity work.”

The game has the potential to bring the community together after a difficult time for the club, so it’s a great opportunity for fans to get involved and maybe meet some of their biggest heroes.

Official line-ups will be released later this week with some exciting names featuring for both including Ryan Lamb (Gloucester RFC), Delon Armitage (Toulon RFC, England International), Gary Kemp and Neil Mustoe.
