The A417 in Gloucestershire was closed due to heavy flooding on the 16th January and is expected to be closed further for 2 days.
The road between Gloucester and Ledbury has suffered flooding from the River Severn.
The official signed diversion route is on to the M50, M5 and then the A40. Local back roads are also being used by light traffic however they are expected to close during peak flooding.
The A417 Maisemore Flood Resilience Scheme involves raising the road out of the flood plain by putting it on a low viaduct.
Each year, the road is closed for about 2 weeks overall due to flooding causing the diversion routes to become congested quickly of commuters.
Closing the road has also resulting in cutting of access to the University of West of England’s Hartpury Campus.
Previously, due to the high cost, the scheme was ignored however, the amount of flooding has increased the need for elevating the road.
No major environmental constraints have been identified for this scheme however no start date has been given for work to take place.
