“Losing him is massive,” Cheltenham Town’s Liam Sercombe on Matty Blair’s retirement

Cheltenham Town midfielder Liam Sercombe has admitted that losing Matty Blair is a huge loss for the Robins, both on and off the pitch.

“Losing him is massive, not just in the changing room but on the pitch. He gave his all every day, and he’s a great character as well, a lot of people would tell you he is one of the nicest people you’ll ever meet,” revealed Sercombe.

“It puts things into perspective that you’ve to work as hard as you can because you never know what will happen but knowing Blairy he’ll have a good future ahead of him with what he does next and we all wish him the very best.”

Blair played 50 times across two years with the Robins, being a key part of the Sky Bet League Two title-winning season in 2020/21.

The defender made the decision to retire following a knee injury that the 33-year-old struggled to recover from.

“I’ve made this decision due to a lack of options really. It’s a knee injury that has been sustained since last season,” said Blair while speaking to the Cheltenham Town website.

Since the Englishman’s retirement, Sercombe has had to step up as one of the most senior members of the dressing room, a role in that he is thriving in.

“Since Blairy announced his retirement I’m the oldest player in the squad and I quite enjoy it. There are a lot of young players in the changing room who are starting their careers now and I hope it’s good for them to have me in the squad to look up to and ask whatever they want and being able to talk about what it’s been like for me at other clubs and my time as a player. I like being the older head and having the younger lads around, they’re a great bunch, we just need to keep plugging away and getting some results.”

The Robins lost 1-0 away against Burton Albion on the weekend and will play Morecambe in League One on Tuesday.
