“Just be a hero, that’s all you can think of as a goalkeeper” – Bristol City goalkeeper Lewis Thomas on his debut and how it feels being a part of a big win

Bristol City Academy goalkeeper Lewis Thomas expressed he was “really delighted” with a 1-0 win against Queens Park Rangers.

Winger, Sam Pearson bagged a last minute winner for Bristol City at The Robins High Performance Centre on Thursday evening, with a brilliant debut performance from Lewis Thomas.

Thomas believed the team excelled in difficult conditions: “Tough game, tough conditions, very scrappy at times but the boys showed very good character for such a young group and yeah pleased with the win.”

The 26-year-old was signed by Forest Green Rovers in 2018, and made 23 appearances for the club. Thomas joined Bristol City on a free transfer recently, as a short term injury cover for Harvey Wiles-Richards, and wasn’t hesitant on getting stuck into the game: “It was really nice to put on a Bristol City shirt, and I am delighted with how it went, with clean sheets”.

With a crucial save in the 93rd minute, Thomas was able to save a shot from Jude-Boyd from close range, he guaranteed the Young Robins the three points and was able to show off his keeping ability while maintaining his debut clean sheet.

When asked what he was thinking in such an intense moment, the Welshman stated, “just be a hero, that’s all you can think of as a goalkeeper, if you think any different usually the ball ends up in the net” with a positive mindset being one of the main key factors of a great performance.

Thomas was pleased with the outcome of his performance as well as his teammates, with it being a tough game and couple of chances for the opposition he was able to be a part of such an important win for them. “Most importantly the boys dug in deep and I got a couple of saves in there which is nice, and yeah i’m just delighted to play my first game.”

The confidence Thomas showed in the game reflected his performance, making some key saves in the match “I was confident and I felt good throughout the game, I was very happy about the game.”
