All eyes on Southampton game for UoG men’s second team after ‘humbling’ Bath defeat

The University of Gloucestershire men’s football team are looking to bounce back to winning ways after a ‘humbling experience’ to begin the season off with.

It wasn’t the greatest of starts for the Cheltenham based team after they lost heavily in their opening game of the season 4-0 to the University of Bath.

Central midfielder Scott Chappell admits that the way they kicked off the 2023/24 season wasn’t what he and the team wanted albeit had reasons for their poor performance.

“We didn’t have much of a pre-season or gelled together; we’ve only had a couple of training sessions before the first game. That was quite hard when we lost 4-0 which was a humbling experience because travelling to Bath on the train there and back it wasn’t great.”’

Gloucestershire face a tricky encounter away to Southampton in the second match of their season.

That matter is made harder by the fact that last Wednesday Southampton battered Bath 5-0, the team that Gloucestershire lost 4-0 against.

Despite this Chappell is buoyant that the South West team can hold their own. ‘’Hopefully a couple of training sessions under our belt and we can hold our own against them.

‘We have to go and get the first goal, we will go from there and fingers crossed we will be all good’’

”Southampton are a tough away game but get them down to our place and I am sure we can get a result in the end.”

In matters not on the pitch the 23 year old is managing to balance work on the pitch and work off the pitch as well.

He doesn’t shy away from the troubles and tribulations that this brings.

‘’In the working area it has been a challenge, getting the feel of the course again.

Learning new things like the live sports coverage and continuation of radio work for example has been a challenge but it’s helpful learning new skills and developing new skills for the future.”
