How betting has become the plague of modern football

At the beginning of this week it was revealed that Premier League stars, Sandro Tonali and Nicolo Zaniolo were the subjects of an illegal betting investigation. They were on international duty with Italy when the news broke and it wasn’t long before they were sent home.

Since the story came about Newcastle’s £55m midfielder he has admitted to betting on AC Milan games while at the club. Fellow Italian international, Nicolo Fagioli was handed a seven month ban on Tuesday for a similar offense and will undergo therapy on his gambling problem.

Will Tonali receive a ban?

The Premier League have had to deal with a betting ban recently with a high profile player after Brentford striker, Ivan Toney, admitted to breaching the F.A’s betting rules 232 times! He received a ban of eight months and is scheduled to be back in action in late January.

Ivan Toney has appeared on The Diary of a CEO podcast since his ban and revealed the mental toll the ban has taken on him “it was not far off that (depression)”. The allegations came out about Toney not long before England’s World Cup squad announcement, where Toney ultimately missed out.

Newcastle will be hoping that Tonali will not face the same punishment. The Italian has been integral in the Toon Army’s season so far, including a 4-1 victory over Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League at St. James’ Park earlier this month.

In a statement, Newcastle said that Tonali is “engaging with the investigation.” They host Crystal Palace this weekend with Eddie Howe revealing in his press conference that his number eight is available for selection and Tonali is “emotional, but handled himself with respect and dignity.”
