Plans have been submitted to start building 1,100 new homes in the West of Cheltenham, near GCHQ. Developers have applied for planning permission from Cheltenham Borough Council as well as Tewkesbury Borough Council to build not only new homes, but an entire mixed-use development called The Golden Valley Development.
The developers plan for this building project to embrace ‘the highest standards of sustainability through ensuring the development is resource efficient and carbon-neutral’. They want each aspect of this development to meet the needs and demands of the local community, like including a primary school as well as walking and cycling routes.
Cheltenham Borough Council predict that this £1bn building project could provide, 12,000 new jobs, 3,700 new homes and a 150,000 square foot National Cyber Innovation Centre in the UK’s first cyber-focused campus.
The government has so far invested £1.9bn into the cyber industry in 2021 and £249m of this investment has been used to purchase the 200-hectare piece of land. The council has also funded the project with a further £180m for high quality homes.
Jessica Holt, senior development manager and the development lead, said: “The West Cheltenham development is one of the most significant and exciting opportunities in the region, and we are pleased to reach this important milestone”.
