Gloucester MP supports Gloucestershire Police’s Anti-Drink Driving Campaign

The annual anti-drink driving campaign is in full swing as Gloucester’s MP, Richard Graham gets behind the current efforts being made by Gloucestershire’s police to crack down on drink driving in the county.

The campaign was launched on the November 30 and aims to promote safe driving during the Christmas period which is notorious for its increase in alcohol consumption and worsened driving conditions.

Gloucester’s MP, Richard Graham explained why it is so vital to support the current efforts being made by the police’s “commitment to seeing safer roads for all road users and too many deaths and injuries on the roads are a consequence of drink driving, which is why these annual campaigns are crucial”.

Mr Graham spoke on how efforts across Gloucester have been made to ensure safety of road users. Some of these initiatives includes the ‘Don’t be a Clive’ campaign which offers free soft drinks to designated drivers in a number of venues across the City.

Alongside these more local initiatives to make the counties road safer, the MP explained how there is more legislative action being taken. Mr Graham welcomes “the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill, which will increase to life imprisonment the maximum penalties for causing death by dangerous driving and death by careless driving when under the influence of drink or drugs”.

As a part of the campaign, the police will continue to publish body cam videos of incidents of drink driving in order to deter drivers from making these potentially life threatening decisions.

Richard Graham said “my message to constituents is the same as the police message, a simple one; don’t drink and drive, it will save lives”.
