Gareth Edwards’ Barbarians shirt, in which he scored rugby’s most famous try, has sold for a world recrd £240,000 in auction.
The shirt is 50 years old having been worn in the famous Barbarians vs New Zealand test match in which the try was scored.
Edwards finished off an incredible seven man move started by the late Phil Bennett who stepped past defenders from inside his own half.
The Shirt from that famous day in Cardiff was put up for auction from Edwards’ prized career collection, and had been valued between £150,000-£200,000 and passed that, taking the total sale from the 39 shirts up to £500,000.
The shirt overtakes that of Dave Gallaher who was captain of the first All Blacks side to tour the British Isles in 1905. He died in the First World War and his shirt was sold for £180,000 eight years ago.
Edwards denied he sold the shirt for his gain, ‘but for the good of my children and grandchildren’
