Forest Green Rovers suffer more misery in the rain as three late goals cost them all three points against Port Vale

It was a cold rainy afternoon on New Year’s Day and Forest Green Rovers were facing Port Vale, writes Joshua Rogers.

On the back of three defeats in a row Rovers were looking to change that in the new year.

Port Vale came in numbers bringing 423 fans and considering it’s around a five hour round trip it’s a decent amount and they were in full voice however a low blow for them conceding in the second minute quietened them down.

Forest Green opened their account in style as they scored very early on through Kyle McAllister.

Before the game Ian Burchnall had been under a lot of pressure with fans calling for him to be sacked all over social media.

He remained on the touchline giving out instructions for the whole game.

It was a lacklustre first half from both sides with very few chances being created apart from the odd pop shot from outside the box every now and then.

Half-time came around and I could smell the food and drink on sale and as it was freezing cold a delicious hot chocolate was on the agenda and it sorted me out.

The heavy rain continued to poor and luckily, I was far back up in stand in the press box so the rain couldn’t hit me, however I’m sure the travelling Port Vale fans had wished they’d stayed home as the Forest Green away end has no cover and all of them were feeling the heavy rain, all I could see was umbrellas and coats.

Most of the second half was quite like the first half in terms of dullness and clear-cut chances were in short supply.

Lewis Cass was down for a very long time after he was challenged leading to the stretcher being brought out.

With ten minutes to go the game completely opened up and four minutes before the 90-minute mark, the substitute Mipo Odubeko equalised.

An astonishing 14 minutes was added on and ten minutes after Vale equalised the referee pointed to the spot and Port Vale were awarded a penalty with Ellis Harrison converting from the spot.

Five minutes after the penalty was converted another substitute Dennis Politic curled an effort from around 25 yards out which went into the top left corner to seal all three points for the away side.

The full-time whistle went shortly after, and boos were circling round the ground with the manager now under even more pressure.
