SIBLING GLORY: The excellent family approach the home nations have taken for this years Commonwealth Games

The English Commonwealth games team has a family feel to it this year as several athletes are joined by fellow family members on the Australian Gold Coast.

In boxing we have Galal Yafai who has progressed into the final of the men’s light flyweight boxing competition. His two brothers Gamal and Kalid, although not competing at this year’s games, are both former GB podium squad members with the latter having gone on to win world honours in boxing’s professional ranks.

Galal is one of British boxing’s brightest amateur stars and showed a very extensive repertoire of punches on his way to an impressive stoppage victory over his semi-final opponent, guaranteeing himself at least a silver medal. He fights India’s Amit in Saturdays final.

Also in boxing, Birtley twins Pat and Luke McCormack both guaranteed medals at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games with victories in their respective quarter-final bouts on Tuesday.

Luke McCormack had to settle for the bronze in his semi-final clash following on from his second round victory over local favourite Liam Wilson, but will be hoping Pat can go one better and reach the final in his respective weight class.

GB and national squad regulars Jonathon and Alasdair Brownlee were left stunned as they both failed to medal in the men’s triathlon. The brothers struggled throughout and laboured to finish 7th and 10th, lamenting injury troubles in the lead up to the games as the reason for their below par performances.

Despite this, the two of them both played a pivotal role in the four-person triathlon where Britain won the silver medal, finishing behind their Australian hosts.

Elsewhere for the home nations, Katie and John Archibald of Scotland won gold and silver respectively in cycling on the same day, whilst Irelands Michaela and Aidan Walsh are assured of at least a bronze medal in boxing.
