In spite of Swindon’s recent poor form, EFL Reporter Gabriel Sutton is confident that Head Coach Scott Lindsey is still the right man for the job and is fully on board with the club’s project.
Saturday’s 0-0 draw with AFC Wimbledon meant it is now five games without a win for Lindsey’s Swindon, having to search back to the 29th of October to find their last victory, a 5-2 demolition of promotion rivals Mansfield Town.
Sutton, who has had the Swindon boss on his very own ‘EFL Debate’ show, admits he has been pleased with Lindsey so far this season with the Robins currently sat in 8th.
“I’ve been very impressed with the work he has done so far, a lot of players in the squad are in their first season of League football and he is developing them well alongside keeping his side in and around the playoffs.”
“Dominating possession is hugely important for Lindsey and that’s the style of play he demands from his team, however, I can understand why supporters would want some more urgency on the ball at times especially when on a poor run of results.”
“There’s also an added pressure due to the club’s history and previous ownership which gives fan an itchiness to get out this league, which can make the fans less patient and adds pressure on the Head Coach.”
After enduring what was an unstable tenure under former owner Lee Power, the club appears to be in a much better place following Clem Morfuni’s purchase of the club back in July 2021.
A lot of work has been done off the pitch to bring back stability, it was announced back in October that the club had cleared what was around 3 million worth of debt owed to the previous ownership.
However, there is now stability on the pitch too, with a promising Head Coach and Technical Director model being in place.
“The model is fantastic.” Said Sutton.
“18 months ago, there were a lot of fears regarding the future of the club, and it’s great to see the structural foundation being put in place.”
Alongside this, Lindsey has been backed in the transfer window and has been dealt with a very talented squad, albeit a rather young one, as the club looks to build for the future.
“The squad is young, and some of the signings made give the indication the club is looking more long term than just getting an immediate promotion.”
“But then again, when you’ve got a squad as talented at your disposal, it would be disappointing if Lindsey couldn’t provide some form of a promotion push, even though these young players are still developing.”
Scott Lindsey and Swindon will be looking to get back to winning ways in League Two when they make the long trip up to Barrow this Saturday.
