Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy and his cousin, Real Madrid defender Ferland Mendy, have complained after being falsely mistaken for Benjamin Mendy amongst news articles surrounding the Manchester City defender’s rape charges.
In August, Benjamin Mendy was accused of four counts of rape and one count of sexual assault, and on Wednesday the 27-year old appeared in court to face another two charges of rape.
Many news outlets have published articles about Benjamin Mendy, however they have used images of both Edouard and Ferland Mendy, to which the pair have responded on Instagram.
Edouard Mendy posted screenshots of various publications using their images, making a small statement alongside it.
“Sad to see that in 2021, in France as well as in England, for some, black people have neither names nor distinct faces.
“These ‘mistakes’ of photos appear anecdotal, but actually they are quite the opposite, they are highly symbolic.
“It’s not that complicated to differentiate two faces, especially when the football jersey is of valuable help!”
Ferland Mendy reposted this on his Instagram story.
