Cirencester Town manager John Brough on his aspirations for the 2022/23 season and impact of Cheltenham Town loanees

John Brough is approaching the final months of the 2022/23 season with excitement after his Cirencester Town side have recovered from their poor start.

The Coriniums sit in seventh in the Pitching In Southern League Division One Central and are two points off the playoff positions.

“We still have got a couple missing in terms of injury, but the squad is stronger now than at the start of the season,” said Brough (pictured above courtesy of Gloucestershire Live).

“I look at the bench and you can bring people on who are going to affect the game.”

Having the options off the bench to change the game is coming as an extra boost to Brough as well as having a settled starting XI.

He said: “If I have to freshen it up, it is not a problem.

“We have had the same team for the last three games which is always good to do.

“It is consistency and continuity which any player wants and that is something we have done well over the last three games.”

A couple of the regular starters in recent weeks have been Zac Guinan and Jay Simpson, two youngsters on loan from League One outfit Cheltenham Town.

Guinan had joined the club on loan earlier in the season before injury cut that short and he has returned with three goals in three games.

Equally Simpson has hit the ground running upon his arrival and Brough believes he is yet to see the best of him.

He added: “He has scored two in two coming off the bench.

“He has done very well as an impact player, but he is more than an impact player.”

The Robins and the Coriniums are separated by less than 20 miles and having the links off the field is benefitting both in the short and long term.

He added: “It is good we can call upon Cheltenham and other professional clubs in the area if we need to strengthen the squad. It works both ways.

“They’re playing first team football and we are getting two good players.”

Cirencester have seen their game against Harlow Town for Saturday cancelled and return to action on Tuesday January 17th away to AFC Dunstable in a rearranged fixture from seven days before.
