Bristol City forward Andreas Weimann would relish a return to international football with Austria

Bristol City forward Andreas Weimann says ‘it would be brilliant to help Austria get in to the World Cup’ as his recent form has put him in contention for a return to international football.

The 30-year-old striker has not been called up to the Austrian squad since 2015, however his impressive performances this season has fought a cause for him to be selected for the next international break.

Austria have a crucial World Cup playoff semi-final tie against Wales in March, a game which Weimann will be relishing to play in.

“We have a couple of big games coming up next month for Austria.

“If I can get in it and help us to get to the World Cup will be brilliant, but to be honest I haven’t thought about it that much as I’m enjoying my football here at the moment.”

Weimann is currently the Robins top goal scorer this season with 15 goals under his belt already, and has played a variety of positions across the front line under manager Nigel Pearson.

When asked about his versatility on the pitch, the Austrian forward claimed it can have its ups and downs.

“It can go either way to be honest, throughout my career I have not played my favourite position all the time just probably because of my versatility where the manager knows he can trust me and knows I will do the work for the team.”

However, more recently Weimann has been occupying a position just behind the strikers, a role he particularly enjoys.

“I do think through the middle is my best position and at this moment in time, whether that’s running in behind working off a striker or two strikers.”

The stats for his time in this position are impressive, tallying six goals and two assists in 10 games so far.

“I think where I’m probably playing now is probably where I can get most of my attributes into the game.

“I’m enjoying playing a bit behind them where I can work off them more, I think I’m benefiting from them playing up front then I can get forgotten about and then using the spaces that they leave.”

This season Weimann has often been accompanied by fellow forward Antoine Semenyo, a player who arrived at the club at a similar time to himself.

The Austrian is full of praise for the 22 year old, who has made 18 appearances for Pearson’s side this season.

“I think he’s always gone past players he’s almost bullied players and been strong, just for whatever reason maybe in the last couple years it hasn’t worked as well as it is now.

“Whether that is because he was still learning or getting used to his body maybe but this season has clicked for him.”

With 14 games left, the former Premier League forward is hoping to continue his fine scoring form for the remainder of the season.

Although he says he doesn’t set himself goal targets, reaching the respected 20 goal mark would mean a lot for him personally.

“Everyone seems to talk about 20 goals when it comes to strikers.

“I just want to help the team out as much as I can, but if I could get 20 goals then it would be an amazing season personally.”
