Round-up of yesterday’s action from the UEFA Women’s Champions League Round of 16 second leg tie as Chelsea held Atletico Madrid to a 1-1 away draw to progress whilst Lyon cruised to a comfortable 3-1 away victory in Brondby which saw them into the Quarter finals, along with Barcelona, Wolfsburg and Bayern Munich.
Atletico Madrid 1-1 Chelsea (Aggregate 1-3)
Chelsea progressed into the quarter final following a 1-1 draw with Atletico, after hanging onto their 2-0 aggregate lead from the home fixture, to come out on top over the two legs. A late penalty from Maren Mjelde was cancelled out by a last minute Emelyne Laurent strike. Interestingly, the men’s team are facing Atletico in the same stage of their competition, but are yet to see whether they will progress, as the West Londoner’s hold a 1-0 lead going into their home fixture. Hopefully the women’s victory can spur the blues onto progressing into the quarters themselves!
Brondby 1-3 Lyon
Lyon cruised into the quarter finals with a comfortable 3-1 away victory in Denmark over FK Brondby, going through with an aggregate score of 5-1 over the two legs. Goals from Nikita Paris, Melvine Malard and a second-half penalty from Wendie Renard wrapped up victory for the French side.
Bayern Munich dismantled BIIK-Kazygurt with a 9-1 aggregate score and progressed following a 3-0 victory at home yesterday evening. Barcelona likewise chalked up a huge aggregate score of 9-0 against German side Fortuna after winning 5-0 in last night’s fixture. Wolsfburg knocked out LSK with a 2-0 victory away from home and Rosengard progressed also winning 2-0 away from home, following a 2-2 draw in their first leg tie.
