Wolfsburg advance in historic win over Arsenal

Arsenal Women were knocked out of the Women’s Champions League last night by Wolfsburg who won 3-1 on aggregate. The German outfit will now advance to the semi-finals to face the current holders Barcelona. After a tense first leg that saw both sides net in a one-one draw. But whilst playing in front of the home crowd, Wolfsburg put on a dominant display.

Jill Roord opened to scoring for Wolfsburg after only 9 minutes. Sveindis Jonsdottir’s lofted ball from a corner rattled around the Arsenal six-yard area before being stabbed in by Roord who wheeled away to celebrate in front of the home fans. A scrappy but significant goal in the context of the tie and Arsenal’s hopes of progression to the semi-finals, but Roord did not seem to mind.

Wolfsburg went on to dominate vast swathes of the game, never allowing Arsenal to get settled and mount a counteroffensive. Arsenal, whilst trying to get back into the game, started to become a little more reckless in their efforts the more the game progressed.

And in the 72nd minute, they paid the price in the form of a Leah Williams own goal. It appeared to massively frustrate the Lioness captain who had only recently returned to the squad following a significant hamstring injury sustained during the North London Derby in November.

The second goal proved to be decisive, and Wolfsburg went on to comfortably win the tie and advance to the semi-finals. For Arsenal, it was a massively disappointing evening in Germany. Boss Jonas Eidevall would have hoped for much more considering his side’s strong performance in the Women’s Super League this season. But for Wolfsburg it’s a massive result that will see them take on one the biggest and best sides in women’s football.
