Lizzie Yarnold carried the British Flag in Pyeongchang at the Winter Olympics opening ceremony. She led all 58 British athletes around the stadium in South Korea, there were due to be 59 British athletes however Katie Ormerod misses out with a fractured heal.
Yarnold said when speaking to the BBC:
“To be the flagbearer for Team GB in Pyeongchang is a huge honour I know the flag represents us a team and it’s what we work so hard for to have on our kits, but we as a team represent the whole of Great Britain and we will march with our heads held high”
Great Britain were the 51St country to enter the stadium packed with 35,000 and are the 18th biggest team out of a total 90 countries. Britain will we be hoping for a total of five plus medals, with Elise Christie who was disqualified last games being one of the favourites to bring home a medal.
US Vice President Mike Pence was present to witness the unification of North and South Korea in the same Olympic team despite the tension between the two countries.
