The 28-year-old received treatment from the club’s medical staff and was taken to hospital where he is still being monitored.
In a club statement, Mal Brannigan, Wigan Athletic’s Chief Executive has stated the club places their sincere appreciation to all of the staff within the NHS who were excellent in their response and subsequent care for Charlie, working together with the club’s medical team.
He has also called for privacy for Charlie and his family at this time, and has said that “at the appropriate time, the team will look to provide further updates to supporters.”
This news comes just two days after Sheffield United midfielder John Fleck collapsed during their game against Reading.
The Scotland International was conscious in hospital after the incident.
With the growing numbers of players collapsing, notably including the distressing scenes at Euro 2020 with Christian Eriksen, there are growing pressures on footballing bodies to decrease the number of games in the calendar year.
The IFAB has rejected a recent proposal today to extend half-time breaks to 25 minutes, which would have allowed a longer rest for players.
The issue is a distressing one and the focus is rightfully on it currently. It just needs a resolution.
