Opponent watch: Who Forest Green Rovers need to look out for against Colchester

Tonight, top-of-the-league Forest Green Rovers face off against 22nd placed side Colchester United.

Currently hovering just one place above the relegation zone, this has been a challenging season for the Oysters as they have battled with COVID issues, though not necessarily within their own camp.

Colchester currently have three games in hand on Stevenage who sit one point ahead of them in the table, as COVID cases in opposition camps disrupted their usually hectic Christmas schedule.

However, COVID isn’t the only issue that the Oysters have been battling this season, with their patchy form seeing them lose nine and draw seven of their fixtures this season, winning just five.

A poor start to the season really cost Hayden Mullins men, who won just one of their opening five games, equally struggling to keep clean sheets and get on the score sheet.

In recent times, positive results have been hard to come by for Colchester who have won once in their last six outings, while keeping just one clean sheet in that time.

One positive for Colchester is the form of striker Freddie Sears, who has managed to bag eight goals and provide one assist despite the contrasting form of his side.

The former Ipswich man was a coup for Colchester in the summer as he played most of his professional career in the Championship before dropping to League One for the last couple of seasons.

Sears has already scored more this season than he has in his last two combined, showing Mullins is getting the most out of the veteran.

Another key player has been goalkeeper Shamal George.

The former Liverpool stopper has been named Colchester’s player of the season so far by a popular Colchester fan page, and for good reason.

Preventing 74.2% of all shots that the stopper has faced, George holds a record not beaten by even those considered to be the “best in the world,” in his position.

Forest Green will be confident that a win is possible tonight as they look to go 10 points clear at the top of League Two in their hunt for promotion, however they will have to be wary of the somewhat overlooked threat that Colchester will bring to the game.
