Who Can Gloucester City Rely On to Change Their Fortunes?

Despite their struggles, Gloucester City still have a number of players who can turn their fortunes around. Although their recent form has not been pleasant viewing for their fans, they do still sit in the top half of the National League North.

They are currently only four points off the play off places, where they were placed one month ago, following a strong October, however after their rough November they now face a battle to get back in.

If Steven King manages to squeeze three points out of his team twice in a week there’s every chance they could move into those spots, and would leave them with the task of solidifying that place for the rest of festive period.

King stated in his welcome interview with the club that he hopes to achieve promotion.

“I saw the potential was there to get promoted, and that’s hopefully what I can do in the two years that I’m here.”

A lot of Gloucester’s strength comes from their attackers, who have been in fine form this season, but have been let down by the defensive performances.

Leading striker Matt McClure has netted 11 goals from 19 games, averaging 0.64 goals per 90. McClure is currently the joint third highest goal scorer in the league, and is only two behind Boston United’s Scott Pollock on 13.

Meanwhile, Vanarama National League North player of the month Kieran Phillips had a stellar October, and has six goals in 13 games, but is currently sidelined with an injury, and will no doubt be a massive boost for The Tigers once fully fit.

Gloucester have strength in depth as well with back up striker Tre Mitford having scored seven goals in 18 matches, a lot of which have been from the bench, and so offers reassurance of goals for Gloucester fans if Matt McClure picks up an injury.

Meanwhile, new signing Dom McHale, who has recently signed a permanent deal with Gloucester until the end of the season, after a month-long loan spell from former club Radcliffe, has managed to provide a spark for The Tigers.

He netted two goals on his debut in a 5-1 win over Farsley Celtic, including an exquisite, curled finish into the far corner from outside the box, and netted another goal in their narrow defeat to AFC Fylde, providing a lot of energy and quality since joining the squad.

Gloucester are also without captain Tommy O’Sullivan who’s out injured, and like Kieran Phillips is likely to bring a lot to the squad once he returns.

There are question marks over Steven King’s position as manager following the poor run of results, however the positions speak for themselves, as he had previously led former club Dartford to three consecutive play off spot finishes.
