Carreras is key; What we learnt from Gloucester’s vital victory against Northampton on Saturday

Whilst the Kingsholm faithful have been treated to some emphatic results this season, of late it’s been more doom and gloom.

With three losses on the bounce including a disappointing home loss to Newcastle Falcons, it was crucial for Skivingtons men to find their form again.

And through the magic hands of Santi Carreras, they did just that.

With that in mind here is what we learnt from Gloucester’s performance

  • Carreras is truly World Class

Spending all this season playing on the wing for the Cherrie and Whites it was finally time for Santi Carreras to take his chance in the number 10 shirt.

Having played there a handful of times for Argentina over the course of his career, there have been calls to see him don the shirt for Gloucester.

And with the call made, he answered it in emphatic style. Clean off the boot, arrow like accuracy through his hands and showing shear class in attack Carreras didn’t put a foot wrong during the 80 minutes and George Skivington was full of praise for the Argentinian.

“We certainly wouldn’t take credit for making Santi a world-class player, he is that.

“He is very, very diligent in what he does and it’s not luck he does. The boys really fed off that.”

With performances like that could we see Carreras spend more time in the fly-half role or will his magic be saved for the wider areas of the pitch.

  • Joue Joue Joue

If there was ever an advocate for ‘just have fun lads’ it seemed that was the message from the home coaching staff.

It was an afternoon of play play play. Kicks in behind, lines of attack, dummies and offloads a plenty. It was a truly magical performance from the likes of Louis Reece Zammit, Chris Harris and the fore-mentioned Carreras.

Gloucester have been known under Skivington for their brutality at the set piece and their ruthlessness off the back of a driving maul.

But on Saturday they showed that they to can play on the prettier end of the rugby spectrum and ultimately it was to much to handle to a dum founded Northampton side.

But whilst it looks great it does come with it’s risk, so will we see Gloucester adopt a similar style on saturday in the Champions Cup?

  • One Atkinson in, the other out?

For years Mark Atkinson has been ever reliable for Gloucester, acting as the heart of their midfield.

But finally after searching for someone to replace the hole that been made without him, Seb Atkinson proved himself to be just the man.

Strong carries, superb in defence and a great partnership with his outside centre Chris Harris, Atkinson could leave the Kingsholm pitch with his head held high and that 12 shirt nailed down.
