Cheltenham Football Gloucester Gloucestershire Interview Non-League Football

“We haven’t been finishing the opportunities that we’ve had to score” Nico Goymer ahead of Leckhampton Rovers VS FC Lakeside

“We are probably 10% away from turning that (shots) into goals,” Nico Goymer gives a critical but fair outlook ahead of Leckhampton Rovers return clash against FC Lakeside.

Leckhampton have struggled this season with their side only scoring eight goals in their last eight games played and only sit on eight points. “We haven’t been finishing the opportunities that we’ve had to score, even though we’ve been creating quite a few opportunities.”

It was only a few weeks ago where a pointless FC Lakeside caused an upset and beat the Rovers side 4-1 and since then, have gone on a streak of three games unbeaten in the Cheltenham Association league Division One.

“We are looking to massively improve performance in the next match compared to the last game against Lakeside and very much believe we can get a positive result.

“The lads are really resilient and work hard whether we win or lose in training and take that positive mentality into each and every match.”

“We need to be stronger in midfield, close and press harder.

“We’ve worked quite hard in training to both deliver the ball in the right areas at the right time with players around them with space and the players that then are receiving the ball are getting the right shape, right position to actually finish, strike the ball well. I think we’re probably 10% away from turning that into goals and as a result, putting up turning losses into victories”

Analysing the previous time out he followed up by saying “We need to deal with a long ball and the set plays. So they had plenty of time on corners and long throw ins to receive the ball and attack our goal.
We weren’t pressing in the right areas.”

Leckhampton have one of the youngest sides in the league on average and will be looking to use that to their advantage on Saturday.

“If lakeside play the same squad, same players, then the plan will be with our younger players to use that physicality and the fitness levels, and instead of trying to match them physically, run them around the park, and at the point where they’re tired, we create the space and the opportunities.”

Although Leckhampton have been struggling they only sit on a minus five goal difference and have only lost by small margins bar the exception of Lakeside.

Nico also gave final reflective thoughts on what he wanted out of the fixture saying “Composure on the ball, not rushing, taking them on one on one, and making them as a team running the first half, much harder than they were made to run when we’ve got the ball.”

It will be a game Leckhampton will be desperate to win as they haven’t won a game in six and currently sit in midtable in 7th place just a point behind Lakeside and will look to leapfrog up the table.
