Monday’s Government announcement from Prime Minister Boris Johnson outlined the UK’s roadmap out of lockdown, in which the opening of non-essential retail was listed as part of phase two, beginning April 12th.
But for retail and the fashion industry, national lockdown has drastically changed people’s shopping habits and the growth of online and independent fashion outlets has been phenomenal.
High street giants have struggled to compete with the growing competition of online brands. With help from TikTok, Instagram and Pinterest, fashion trends have evolved rapidly.
Although Debenhams’ struggle to stay afloat wasn’t much of a shock, it was certainly a surprise to the nation to see the collapse of Arcadia Group, home to Topshop, Miss Selfridge and Dorothy Perkins. Many now fear for the future of the high street.
