Women’s Champions League draw: Arsenal to face eight time champions Lyon

The groups for the first round of this season’s women’s Champions League draw have been confirmed this afternoon.

Chelsea and Arsenal are the sides representing England in the competition and both will have to endure tough groups. Arsenal have drawn reigning and eight time champions Lyon along with Juventus and Zurich, and Chelsea will face off against PSG, Real Madrid and Vllaznia.

It’s a tough draw for both sides. Chelsea will be looking to build on their domestic success of last year and hopefully achieve the dream of a first Champions League title but it will be a real test with two time runners up PSG in their group

Arsenal narrowly missed out on the WSL title last year so it will remain to be seen which competition they devote more resources to. The Gunners were knocked out of last seasons tournament by Wolfsburg in the quarter finals so will be looking to improve upon that disappointing finish to what had been such a promising campaign.

One thing to consider for both sides is the ever growing number of eyes on them. The Women’s Euros this past summer showed how popular women’s football is becoming and I wouldn’t be surprised to see some high average attendances over the course of the tournament.
