The UOG student union recently announced that sports such as cricket, athletics, and swimming will not feature at the 2024 varsity event against University of Worcester later in the academic year.
In a statement made by the student union which was sent to sports teams it says, “Both Worcester SU and Gloucestershire SU are experiencing financial difficulties brought by a range of factors.
“As a result we’re facing a situation where we have no choice but to condense the varsity program… Unfortunately there will be some sports that we are unable to accommodate and therefore we are unable to facilitate their event in varsity 2024.”
It has since been confirmed that these sports that are not being accommodated are cricket, athletics and swimming.
The confirmed reason for these specific sports being cancelled for varsity is because neither university own the facilities to host the sports so out sourcing locations for them would cost the universities money they do not have, as stated in the release the SU gave.
The response from everyone has been negative to the news, some have been more understanding, however on the other hand, there are some students who just don’t understand why.

One person said, “this is such a disappointment from a student stand point, we not only pay £130 to join a sport and compete for the uni but also put so much time and effort in as well. And even before the BUCS season has started we are told the only event we get lots of attendees to display our sport with pride has been canceled, it’s a joke”
Another one went on to say, “Varsity is a great opportunity for people who don’t really get game time or get the chance to play properly feel part of the team, as we make sure everyone gets involved.
“Now with that gone, there will be some people on teams who won’t get that chance”
There are many more responses along those lines, with people saying, “it’s the only time people care about our sport”.

Even students who’s sports are currently still featuring at Varsity are annoyed by the recent news, “It’s not ideal, varsity is a time for the different uni sports to come together in support of one another.
“But if you take that away from a group of people the likelihood is they won’t come to other events to support, so this situation is affecting everyone.”
In response to the news one of the sports that has been effected is trying to find a work around for the issue. We were told by the sport in question that they have been in contact with their Worcester counterparts and are currently trying to organise a ‘varsity’ match outside of the SU banner, how far they get only time will tell.
Whatever happens with this situation, it is a massive blow for multiple people at both Universities.
Hopefully with their being a large amount of time until varsity, there will be positive developments and these sports will be back on the game list soon.
